Yea it was news to me too.
When I opened my lease renewal paperwork last night, I about vommed when I saw they were raising my rent by almost 25%. Making my studio apartment in a ‘vintage’ [read: old-ass] building officially too expensive for me to afford to live in. It doesn’t help that with my new job, my salary is going to be unpredictable to say the least over the next couple of months (the joys of working in sales!).
I called to talk to my building manager today to see what could be done and he essentially told me ‘tough s**t’, and that he has a business to run and I should look elsewhere if I can’t afford it. That’s a nice how do you do to a tenant who has been nothing but low-maintenance for three freaking years. Even as my voice broke on the phone, he told me emotionlessly that he’d need it in writing that I was leaving within the next two days. Apparently hoping for a little bit of compassion and understanding was too much to ask.
N-E-WAYS. This is obviously not the end of the world and it’s not like I’m going to end up homeless or anything. It’s just sort of a crummy thing to have sprung upon you when you weren’t really in the mindset (mentally, physically, financially) to move. And not to mention the whole looking for a new apartment part of it, in all its time-consuming, handwringing glory.
I’m hoping for the best and hey - maybe I’ll even find a place that’s better and it will all be a blessing in disguise.
